Application overview

Student at a lab bench
Rasheed Sule, an alumnus of an HBCU who did summer research at UC Davis, studies cell signaling in cardiovascular diseases.

Applications to BioGAP and the FACES REU for Summer 2023 are open.

You can use this application for both BioGAP and the FACES REU in developmental biology.

Funding for both programs is limited to US citizens or permanent residents. We regret that we are unable to support international students.

We evaluate applicants using holistic review, which is an evidence-based approach to identify people that are likely to be successful in biology research, regardless of what research opportunities may have been available to them prior to their application.

In the application, we ask you to list up to five faculty whose work interests you. Please go to the page that describes our participating faculty to investigate potential areas of investigation before you complete the application. For FACES, be sure to include Professor Crystal Rogers as one of the faculty.

Please use a word processor to prepare your responses to the questions below, then go to the application button on the bottom right and open the form. Paste your work into the text box or upload your statement, as appropriate. The form will not save work in progress.

If you encounter difficulty, please email Carole Hom, clhom@ucdavis.edu, with "help with BioGAP/FACES application" in the subject line.

An application to the BioGAP or FACES program consists of the following.

  • Information from you, submitted via the button at the bottom right of this page.
  1. An online application form to collect basic information on you and your research interests.
  2. An unofficial transcript. Please use the filename LastNameFirstName_transcript and save it as a .pdf
  3. Responses to the following prompts, each using no more than half a single-spaced page. We encourage you to consider sharing a draft with a faculty member at your institution to provide feedback. Assemble your responses into a single file, use the filename LastNameFirstName_app and save it as a .pdf.
    1. Describe a previous research experience. In your response, please include the name of the institution where you did the research and the name of the faculty member who oversaw the project. What research question did you address and what was your role in the research? (if you have no prior research experience, please answer this question using an experiment or project from a class, and include the title of the course)
    2. The purpose of this essay is to learn something about your academic interests. Please describe your academic and career goals and how the BioGAP program will help you achieve those goals.
    3. The purpose of this essay is to get to know you as an individual and potential scholar in BioGAP/FACES. Please tell us about how your life experiences brought you to apply for BioGAP/FACES.
  • In addition, we require two letters of recommendation, with at least one from a faculty member in the sciences. Please ask your references to address your creativity and innovation, commitment to long-term goals, resilience and adaptability, academic preparation, contributions to broader impacts, leadership and work experience, and research experience. Please ask your references to send their letter to Carole Hom at clhom@ucdavis.edu with your name in the subject line and in the file name.
