For students who seek graduate study in biology, the answer is simple: The BioGAP program at UC Davis provides a stellar research experience and superb preparation for graduate study. 

• Our faculty do research at the cutting edge of science and are skilled mentors recognized for their work with students.
• In addition to hands-on research, BioGAP scholars will prepare for application to graduate programs, receive detailed written comments on statements of purpose, and network with current UC Davis graduate students and faculty. By the end of the summer, BioGAP scholars will know what to expect in graduate school.

Further, campus' record of strong support for diversity and inclusion in STEM disciplines has its roots in a deep commitment to student-centered undergraduate teaching and mentoring. In 2019, UC Davis ranked first in the nation in the number of students from underrepresented groups earning PhDs in agricultural sciences and 14th nationally in biological and biomedical sciences.

Program logistics

During the summer program at UC Davis, BioGAP scholars will live in comfortable, up-to-date campus housing, with a flexible meal plan, health coverage, and access to UC Davis’ superb student recreation facilities. Each BioGAP scholar will have a rented bicycle for transportation around the campus. Last but not least, the formal program includes field trips, social events, and other outings.

Davis is centrally located in northern California, with convenient public transportation to Sacramento and San Francisco for weekend excursions.

Our Mediterranean climate and location near the Sacramento River Delta generally lead to warm, dry days with a cool evening breeze. Residents enjoy summer concerts both outdoors and at the Mondavi Center, a Farmer’s Market that has received national recognition, and downtown conveniently near the UC Davis campus.

For those who seek outdoor recreation, Davis has miles of bike paths, and pleasant trails for walking and running. Weekend excursions to San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, the coast, and Sierra Nevada are only a few hours away.

Land acknowledgement

We should take a moment to acknowledge the land on which we are gathered. For thousands of years, this land has been the home of Patwin people. Today, there are three federally recognized Patwin tribes: Cachil DeHe Band of Wintun Indians of the Colusa Indian Community, Kletsel Dehe Wintun Nation, and Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation.

The Patwin people have remained committed to the stewardship of this land over many centuries. It has been cherished and protected, as elders have instructed the young through generations. We are honored and grateful to be here today on their traditional lands.
